Registering your number for business texting (10DLC)
Why texts from an unregistered number can silently go missing, and how to register your business from DoneWell.
All help topics
In the US and Canada, carriers require every business that texts customers from a regular 10-digit number to register first. Until a number is registered, carriers may filter your texts without telling anyone: Telnyx accepts the message, DoneWell shows it as sent, and the customer never receives it. Nothing on your side looks wrong — which is why DoneWell warns you on Settings → Integrations → Telnyx while your registration is missing or not yet approved.
Before you start
- Your Telnyx API key must be saved in the Account section of the same page — the application is filed with your own Telnyx account.
- Have your legal business name, tax ID (Canada: the 9-digit Business Number; US: EIN), business address, a contact person, and links to your website (or a social media page), privacy policy and terms of service ready.
- Telnyx charges registration fees to your Telnyx account: a one-time fee for the business (brand), a review fee each time a campaign is submitted, and a monthly campaign fee.
Filing the registration
Open Settings → Integrations → Telnyx and, in SMS registration (10DLC), click Start registration. The form is pre-filled from your company settings; check every field. The "How you text customers" part is what the reviewers read most closely — the example messages must match what you actually send, include your business name and say how to opt out (Reply STOP to opt out). Tick the box confirming the details are accurate and submit.
Business type
- Private company and Non-profit — need the tax ID.
- Sole proprietor — for an owner-operator without a Business Number or EIN. No tax ID is asked for; instead, right after you submit, a verification code is texted to the mobile phone you entered. Type it into the Verification code box on the same card (Send a new code if it did not arrive or expired). Typed the mobile wrong? Wrong number? Change it updates your registration and texts a new code to the corrected number. Nothing goes to the carriers until the code is confirmed. A sole-proprietor registration covers one texting number — your default line.
- Public company — also asks for the ticker symbol, the stock exchange and a business contact email.
The business type is fixed once your brand is registered: a Fix and resubmit after a rejection keeps it. To register under a different type, contact support.
Statuses
- Under review — the application is with the carriers. Reviews usually take a few days and can take up to three weeks. The page checks on it each time you open it, and Check status asks again right away. Do not file a second application while one is under review.
- Approved — your business is registered, and your active texting numbers are attached to it automatically. The warning disappears.
- Rejected — the reason from the reviewers is shown on the page. Click Fix and resubmit: the form opens with what you sent last time, so you only change what the reason points at. A rejected campaign is resubmitted as a new campaign (a new review fee).
